Züsman Bernstein (“Zus”), a German Jew and an honorable tavern keeper, could never have imagined he would get caught up in the shadow-world of espionage and deception. But, carried along by a tide of events far beyond his control, Zus is now called upon to make decisions of tremendous courage in a time of utter terror. Threatened with his own death and that of his son unless he accepts a mission on behalf of the forces of evil, Zus is about to refuse and face his fate... until a pair of secret agents make him an offer that might save both him and his son. Zus is far from out of danger yet, though, as two powerful nations battle over the top secret information in his possession. With his son’s life hanging in the balance, Zus’ dilemma is whether to cooperate with his greatest enemies or his highly suspicious allies....

As the proprietor of a German-style tavern in Nazi-occupied Warsaw, 1942, Zus narrowly escaped the fate of his fellow Jews, who were rounded up and resettled in the Warsaw Ghetto. Zus’ tavern featured the best German cuisine in Warsaw and was a favorite of the local Wehrmacht commander, Hans Lumberger, so he was miraculously allowed to stay and operate it.

Everything changes one night when S​S-​Oberst-Gruppenführer Von Hauser, a high officer in the Propaganda Ministry, visits the tavern as a guest of Lumberger and is furious to discover that the owner is a Jew. But when Von Hauser finds out Zus has a son, he sees an opportunity.

The ​Abwehr, the German intelligence agency, has been trying to find a way to securely smuggle top secret information to their chief agent in America. Von Hauser realizes that, as a Jewish “refugee,” Zus would be the perfect person to avoid suspicion while carrying the documents. To make sure he doesn’t betray them, the Nazis will hold Zus’ son in custody, promising to deliver him safely to America when Zus completes the mission.

Zus, though, cannot imagine cooperating with the Nazis.

The story only gets more complex and suspenseful from there, as American secret agents offer to save Zus’ son if he pretends to cooperate with Von Hauser and hands over the invaluable information to them. When he arrives in New York, Zus faces a whole new set of challenges. Will he keep his deal with the Nazis, who promise to spare his son—or the Americans, who say they will save him from their clutches? The dilemma grows as a battle between American rescuers and Nazi soldiers alerts the Germans that something has gone very, very wrong.

Bad turns to worse when Zus becomes the prime suspect in a murder case, and the Americans begin to believe he might be a triple agent after all...
