The silk knickers and nightgown were snapped up by a UK-based phone bidder after being auctioned in Northamptonshire on Friday. Experts predicted the underwear to sell for just £800 each, but unexpected interest saw one Brit buyer pay over the odds to get their hands on them. Both garments have Eva Braun's monogrammed initials embroidered on them. The label states they were knitted in the German province of Bavaria in 1944. According to Humbert & Ellis Auctioneers in Towcester, the undies are generally in good condition, but have some signs of age, with a number of foxing marks. They sold for £3,000, but with fees added on the total price paid for the knickers was £3,700. The white frilly lace nightshirt sold for a total of £2,600. Both items were sold by a World War Two memorabilia collector who had owned them for more than 50 years. Auctioneer Jonathan Humbert said: "There continues to be a perennial interest in personal artefacts from such notorious high-level figures of World War Two and accordingly such items, even without provenance, command high prices. "We were taking bids for them last week, long before we opened the auction. "Both items will be kept together as they were bought by a UK-based telephone bidder. "It is a stunning result for us and our vendor was equally gobsmacked." Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler and Eva met in 1929 when she was 17 and he was 40. He took her as his mistress, before he married her in April 1945, one day before the pair took their own lives as it was clear the Germans had lost the war. Braun swallowed cyanide, while Hitler shot himself in the head in the Fuhrer's Berlin bunker as the Allied forces closed in on the German capital. Many Jewish groups and other organisations have slammed the selling of Hitler memorabilia and condemned anyone who makes money from ghoulish reminders of the Third Reich. In February this year, an auctioneer was criticised for organising the selling of Adolf Hitler's nude paintings and favourite swastika armchair .
